Getting dressed while pregnant can be an interesting challenge. Depending on how far along you are, your usual clothes might not fit quite like they used to, leading you to shop for maternity-specific styles. “Maternity clothing is designed for optimal comfort and support, accommodating a growing belly and providing relief to pressure points,” says Jillian Obarski, a stylist at Stitch Fix. “The health advantages are notable too, as well-fitting maternity garments can aid in preventing issues like restricted blood flow and back pain.”
As someone who’s learned a lot about dressing for comfort and fashion during my two pregnancies, I can say it takes some time and experimentation to nail down a pregnancy style that makes you feel chic and comfortable. The following maternity brands have what you need to build a small but mighty capsule wardrobe: some tops, pants, a dress or two, plus the appropriate underwear and outerwear. They also serve you well in postpartum since it can take time to fit into your less stretchy non-maternity clothes (if that’s one of your goals). To cull the best maternity brands, I drew on my pregnancy experiences, conversed with fashion experts, and spoke with fellow moms and moms-to-be. Read on to learn more about the best maternity brands.
Best for Dresses
Dresses are one of the most comfortable garments you can wear during pregnancy. They don’t require you to piece together a complicated look or battle a waistband pressing into your already-strained stomach. These brands make the best maternity and postpartum dresses, offering options for vacations (necessary), special occasions, and everything in between.
- Légoe Heritage: This underrated Australian brand is one of pregnant people’s best-kept secrets when it comes to comfortable, stylish basics you’ll wear all the time. Its knit dresses are some of its top sellers, as they’re comfortable and breathable without feeling thin. The dresses, from the linen Margot to the Knit Cotton Wrap Dress, are reasonably priced and very chic.
- Motherhood Maternity: Motherhood Maternity has functional basics at extremely reasonable prices, including maternity dresses. Whether you’re looking for a knit midi or a long-sleeved babydoll mini, this brand makes a variety of pieces that hug and flow over your bump. It’s also one of designer and seamstress Aaronica Cole’s favorites. “What list is complete without it?” she asks.
- PinkBlush: Shoppers mostly know PinkBlush for its pretty pregnancy dresses (picture floral sundresses and curve-hugging midis) that work perfectly for a baby shower or formal event. It makes petite, tall, and plus-size styles (the site has a whole plus-size section, which I appreciate), so it’s very size-inclusive.
- H&M Mama: H&M Mama has really good dresses at extremely affordable prices, and it also offers some trendy pieces (which can be fun since you’ll wear these clothes for a relatively short time). Some of the clothes are designed for before and after pregnancy, which means increased longevity. You can also bring old clothes to the store so they can be recycled.
Best for Everyday Clothes
Great everyday staples—like cute button-downs, sweaters, and skirts—are hard enough to find when you’re not pregnant. When you need to like them and fit them over a growing belly, it can feel like a Herculean task. Luckily, the below brands take the styles you love to wear during your pre-pregnancy days and add additional stretch and fabric around the stomach for a bump-friendly fit. This way, you can feel put together and, most importantly, like yourself as your body changes.
- Hatch: If you’re looking for a non-frumpy maternity style, Hatch is a must-shop brand. The site offers a ton of variety, from jumpsuits to formal dresses to activewear. The New York City-based brand prioritizes style first and then customizes its pieces for pregnant people, unlike some other maternity brands that compromise silhouette and appearance for the sake of comfort.
- Madewell: If you like Madewell already, or if you love the classics—jeans, T-shirts, and so on—start your pregnancy shopping here. It offers a wide range of maternity products, so you can essentially get everything you need in one place. Flowy rompers with extra space in the tummy, nursing tank tops, and loose slip dresses galore.
- Ingrid + Isabel: From the creator of the Bellaband, Ingrid+Isabel has expanded its maternity offerings. There’s a whole section of great basics and another section for postpartum clothes (designed to fit you while you’re nursing, pumping, exercising, running after a child, and so on). I’m also a fan of the matching denim jackets for moms and babies.
- Séraphine: Séraphine is one of Kate Middleton’s go-to maternity brands, and with good reason. The London-based brand has a variety of maternity and postpartum clothes that come in petite and curvy sizing. Its garments are well-constructed, which means the pants and shorts have plenty of bump support.
Best for Undergarments
Your belly isn’t the only area growing during pregnancy; Your breasts, butt, and hips can expand and swell as well. According to obstetrician-gynecologist Lawren Honken, M.D., many pregnant women experience “breast and nipple tenderness,” which means “your bra size will likely increase, and you may need more support.” As you experience these changes, it can be difficult to find the right nursing bra, nonslip underwear, and pieces with belly support. Therefore, shop brands that have made it their sole purpose to aid pregnant women with carefully designed undergarments.
- Lively: Lively has cute, supportive, and affordable nursing bras that double as maternity bras. No detail is too small for the brand. With adjustable straps, wide bands, gentle fabric, wireless designs, and inner slings for nursing, these breathable bras are about as comfortable and wearable as maternity undergarments get.
- Quince: Quince does affordable, well-made basics better than most brands. For affordable, mindfully made maternity undergarments and shapewear, shop its robust selection of nursing bras, postpartum thongs, and over-the-belly briefs. I’ve tried the Quince nursing bras and liked its thickness and softness (as well as the price).
- Skims: When Skims released its Fits Everybody fabric, it took the name to heart. The splashy, Kim Kardashian-founded shapewear brand uses the second-skin material to craft supportive maternity garments ranging from high-waisted leggings and pumping bralettes to sleek catsuits and bump-hugging slip dresses.
- Kindred Bravely: Because Kindred Bravely is a brand created by moms for moms, which is reflected in each of its maternity undergarments. From bamboo underwear that sits directly below your growing belly to award-winning adjustable nursing bras, the designs anticipate and meet pregnancy needs, combatting chafing, rubbing, and constriction.
Best for Jeans
If none of your favorite jeans fit anymore, don’t sweat it. Many popular denim brands have a maternity line with jeans that either have stretch panels around the waist to accommodate a growing belly or a band that goes over the belly to prevent slippage. Dr. Honken also notes that your legs can swell in your third trimester, which these brands have taken into consideration while designing their collections. Whether you opt for an over-the-belly or under-the-belly style is up to you, but the following brands do maternity jeans the best.
- Abercrombie & Fitch: Since Abercrombie & Fitch’s resoundingly successful rebrand, it’s designed some maternity versions of the classic denim styles. Crafted with stretch fabric, elastic belly bands, and plenty of pockets, the brand’s maternity jeans will have you forgetting about your pre-pregnancy pants. Choose between baggy, jegging, straight, and skinny styles in an array of inseams and washes.
- Gap: Gap makes sure its maternity jeans have all the features you love in its regular ones—plenty of functional pockets, wash variety, and different cuts included. The brand uses a stretchy denim to maximize comfort during all pregnancy stages, and you can choose between pairs with a full or inset panel based on your preference.
- Paige: When you’re in the throws of pregnancy, the last thing you want to do is wear a rigid, constrictive pair of jeans. With Paige’s maternity offerings, that thought doesn’t even have to cross your mind. The brand offers classic cuts from straight to wide-leg in soft, stretchy denim with elastic side panels. So you can wear your Paige jeans as you belly grows.
- DL1961: Family-owned brand DL1961 carries its commitment to sustainable denim over to its maternity offerings, using less than 10 gallons of water to make each pair (that less than a standard five-minute shower). It took some of its most beloved designs—the Patti, Thea, Hepburn, Florence, and more—and adjusted the measurements to fit you throughout your pregnancy, adding in side paneling to the waistbands.
Best for Lounging
If it were up to many people, they’d stay in loungewear for all nine months—or 40 weeks—of their pregnancy. Listen: That’s their prerogative. Thankfully, there’s plenty of soft, cushy, and comfortable maternity loungewear. Fleece-lined sweatpants and knit cardigans will ensure you get the best rest while cooking up your bundle of joy.
- Bumpsuit: Bumpsuit CEO Nicole Trunfio created this brand during her third pregnancy after struggling to find a comfortable pregnancy style during her first two. The result? Cozy, ultrasoft pieces that complement your changing body throughout and after your pregnancy. Oh, and the brand’s signature “bumpsuit” is designed to be a base layer that works before, during, and after pregnancy.
- Storq: Storq has a wide variety of loungewear styles, and I particularly like the chic nursing and postpartum options. When in doubt, get one of the best-selling bras or leggings. It’s “comfy and stylish for both the pregnant and fourth-trimester mamas,” says Cole.
- Beyond Yoga: As the brand name implies, Beyond Yoga has great activewear—but beyond sports bras and leggings, the collection includes dresses, joggers, jumpsuits, and other comfy clothes. Anyone who wants to feel comfortable and cozy during their pregnancy should at least take a peek at the collection (its four-watch stretch Spacedye material is buttery soft). For clothes you’ll live in all day, it’s a great pick.
- Cache Coeur: This French brand makes chic, cozy loungewear and lingerie for pregnancy and nursing. Throwing on its matching sets is an easy way to feel assembled at home, and its designs are made with mom’s needs in mind. For example, its hoodie has two invisible zippers at the armholes to allow for easy breast-feeding access.
What to Keep in Mind
- Size: While shopping for maternity clothes, you typically buy your usual size—unless a brand suggests otherwise. You should still check the size chart and customer reviews for each specific piece of clothing and be prepared to buy multiple sizes to do a try-on. Also, a garment that fits in the second trimester might not fit in the third, so don’t purchase anything that feels too tight when you put it on. Don’t feel disheartened if the first few items you order don’t fit like a glove. “Sometimes I feel like finding size-inclusive maternity brands is like finding a diamond in the rough,” says Cole.
- Fabric: “Expecting parents who are on the hunt for maternity clothes should prioritize both comfort and quality—investing in a few high-quality pieces made with high stretch, breathable fabrics that can withstand many wears,” says Shelby Goldfaden, M.M.LaFleur’s director of merchandising. Obarski explains that “expecting moms should prioritize cotton, spandex, and jerseys that accommodate a growing belly and provide ample support.” She adds, “I also recommend breathable fabrics that help regulate body temperature and high-quality items that ensure durability through multiple pregnancies or postpartum wear.” And one last note: Dr. Honken suggests clothing with UPF protection, which “can help protect you from harmful UV rays and sunburns, which increase skin cancer risk.”
- Design: Design is an especially important factor to consider while buying maternity pants, shorts, and skirts. Do you prefer a style that sits under or over your bump (usually accomplished with a band of fabric that covers most of your abdomen)? For pants that go over the bump, keep the fabric’s elasticity in mind. “Elastic waistbands, drawstrings, and wrap designs offer a customized fit throughout different stages of pregnancy,” says Obarski. Some garments also offer adjustable features, like a nursing bra with an unhookable strap, which makes breastfeeding much easier.
- Care: The main question to ask while shopping for maternity clothes is whether or not an item is machine washable. “You may have worse body odor or sweat more easily during pregnancy,” says Dr. Honken. Therefore, you should opt for “clothes that wash well.” That includes bras, underwear, and other shapewear. It doesn’t matter what the item is—you want to be able to clean it thoroughly and quickly.
- Seasonality: If you’re in your second trimester, don’t just buy for this season—buy for the upcoming one, too, because you’ll still be pregnant or in early postpartum. If you’re buying in the summer, get some T-shirts, sweaters, and pants for the cooler weather.
Your Questions, Answered
How many weeks into pregnancy should I buy maternity clothes?
The answer to this question is a little different for everyone, but the ideal moment to start wearing maternity clothes is whenever you feel like your “regular” clothes aren’t fitting anymore and you want looser clothes. Dr. Honken explains that women start to show “usually around 12–18 weeks, but there is a wide variation based on the number of pregnancies you’ve had, body size, uterine position, and baby’s size.”
Can you wear non-maternity brands while pregnant?
Yes! Regular low-rise pants, for example, can comfortably fit under the belly without causing constriction. You can also wear stretchy tops through the first and second trimester. And of course, oversized sweaters and flowy dresses drape easily over a growing belly. When in doubt, it doesn’t hurt to size up from your usual.
“A non-maternity brand I love for expecting moms is Free People,” says Obarski. “The brand offers a variety of flowy dresses, which are perfect for vacation and nights out.” You can also wear some of these maternity brands while you’re not expecting. If you like the brands’ maternity clothes, dip into their non-maternity sections following your pregnancy. And if you’ve just given birth, you can head over to the “postpartum” section.
What clothing styles should you avoid during pregnancy?
From a safety perspective, you should avoid any garments that cut off circulation, whether it be tight strappy shoes, high socks or stockings, or even shirts that feel tight in the neck or arms. From a practical perspective, you want to avoid anything tight or non-stretchy; there’s no need for your clothes to add any discomfort. “Pregnant people should avoid fabrics that will cling to skin or pucker. When shopping for maternity clothes, I recommend looking for options that will grow with you—not fight against you,” says Goldfaden.
